The Department of Justice is set to ask members of the public for their views on whether or not Ireland should scrap Daylight Savings Time.
The Cabinet signed off on a consultation process yesterday.
Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan expressed his hope that people would engage in the process.
He'll report back on his findings in the new year.
The European Commission has already recommended scrapping the tradition of member states alternating between summertime and wintertime every year.
Flanagan expressed that the island of Ireland is unique in having two jurisdictions and the possibility of two different time zones, which he said would not be welcome.
The plan would see the last mandatory summertime change take place on Sunday, March 31 2019.
Current Brexit proposals suggest Britain will leave the European Union on March 29, 2019. The British government has no plans to end the time changing tradition.
